After the tram crash in Croydon on 9th November 2016, experts insist that trams remain one of the safest forms of public transport.

Seven people died and more than 50 were injured in the incident in Croydon, South London when the tram derailed after passing through a tunnel near Sandilands. Survivors were taken to hospital with a range of injuries, some of which are life changing. It has been highlighted that this is the first UK tram crash in over 50 years involving fatalities.

British Transport Police are investing the incident and exploring whether there has been any criminal activity. Consideration is being given to whether the tram was exceeding speed limits and the possibility that the driver may have fallen asleep. Unlike trains, trams are not fitted with systems that apply breaks automatically if going too fast. That said, they do have a device that breaks automatically if the driver is incapacitated.

The families are still waiting to find out what went wrong. The Rail Accident Investigation Branch is looking at the technical aspects of the crash. Eye witnesses say that the tram was going too fast – the question is why? Furthermore, local residents claim that long before this tragic crash - they warned the authorities about the tight corner and drivers speeding.

The local community has been left devastated. The victims of the fatal crash were remembered during a memorial on Sunday, a day after a minutes silence was held following Armistice Day commemorations in Croydon.
