An investigation by the National Crime Agency (NCA) into child abuse allegations in Rotherham has revealed that two of the 300 new suspects in the inquiry are local councillors.
The Guardian reports that the NCA inquiry into the Rotherham child abuse cover-up has generated more than 3,000 new lines of enquiry.
The councillors under investigation are former or current members of the local council.
The NCA inquiry was launched after publication of a damning report into Rotherham’s child sex exploitation cover up by Professor Alexis Jay – whose report was prompted by an investigation by The Times newspaper.
NCA detectives have identified around 1,400 female victims of child sex exploitation – and say the figures reflect Prof Jay’s own research.
The NCA inquiry in Rotherham – Operation Stovewood – involves 32 police officers.
So far, 92 boxes of files relating to the abuse of girls in Rotherham between 1997 and 2013 have been collected.
The NCA has collected 47 crates of files from Risky Business – a specialist service in Rotherham set up to monitor children at risk.
Workers at Risky Business had complained that they were “belittled” by other agencies – and their files were tampered with.
The NCA said it could not yet be confident that officers had recovered all the files from Risky Business – the service was shut down by Rotherham Council in 2011.
