North Lincolnshire Council is advising consumers to make sure their electric blankets are safe as the cooler weather arrives in autumn.
The council says that electric blanket danger signs include creasing or folding, frayed fabric, elements that are exposed, worn cabling and scorch marks after use. Electric blankets which have been exposed to damp or have water marks on them are also potentially dangerous.
The council is offering free electric blanket tests during September – Cabinet Member for Safer, Greener and Cleaner places, Councillor Richard Hannigan, said:
“If you have an electric blanket and haven’t had it tested, please take advantage of our free electric blanket tests in North Lincolnshire to make sure your electric blanket is safe.
“It is much cheaper to replace an electric blanket than it is your home, so come down to one of our venues on 20 and 28 September to see if your electric blanket is safe for use.”
Electric blankets should be stored carefully without folding – which can damage wiring. The council recommends rolling an electric blanket for storage.
The UK Fire Service also advises consumers not to buy a second hand electric blanket – and to look for the British or European standard.
Buyers should also make sure an electric blanket has a safety certification mark and has overheat protection, to prevent fires and injury.
