Think tank the Institute of Directors has said that David Cameron’s policy on immigration is damaging business in the UK – and “radical policies” to prevent migrants coming to the UK will damage the economy.
BBC News reports that the comments coincide with the latest set of figures on net migration, due to be published today (27/08/15).
The Institute of Directors and British Future are both calling for a “comprehensive immigration review” to establish policies that could be put in place to achieve the government’s “tens of thousands” target – as well as their potential impact on the UK's economy, culture and society.
The organisations recommend that the Prime Minister and Home Secretary should ask the Migration Advisory Committee to set out plans for dealing with immigration and any likely impact, which would then be put to the general public at town hall meetings across the country – with a “citizens’ jury” to reflect public opinion.
Director of British Future, Sunder Katwala, said:
"The Prime Minister currently has no long-term plan to meet his net migration target. It is little wonder there is such low public trust on immigration and the government's ability to manage it.”
Director general of the Institute of Directors, Simon Walker, said:
“Scrabbling around to find measures to hit a bizarre and unachievable migration target is no way to give British businesses the stable environment they need.
“Combined with ministers' increasingly strong rhetoric on immigration, the UK's reputation as an open, competitive economy is under threat.”
