Supporters of immigration to the UK are to stage a solidarity walk in support of detainees at Gatwick Immigration Detention Centre.
Crawley News reports that the 80-mile walk staged by Crawley Young Persons’ Council and refugees in the UK will take place from 13 June to 21 June 2015, to raise awareness of the struggle faced by people trying to reach the UK.
The walk is being modelled on Chaucer’s Canterbury Tales – a selection of often bawdy tales depicting a pilgrimage to Canterbury by a group of travellers.
Readings from the Canterbury Tales will take place along the route of the walk – planned to coincide with Refugee Week.
The walk was launched earlier in November by Crawley Young Person's Council during a discussion of immigration and racism in Crawley.
Members of the council saw a quilt made with the help of the Gatwick Detainee Welfare Group, which depicts scenes based on stories from asylum seekers.
The welfare group's 90 volunteers visit detainees held at the immigration removal centres Brook House and Tinsley House, situated near Gatwick Airport.
