Labour leader Ed Miliband has said he will not make “false promises” about changing his immigration policy, after Labour narrowly took the Heywood & Middleton seat in northern England on Thursday.
The Labour stronghold was returned to Labour in the by-election – but the party won by just 617 votes, with UKIP in second place.
The Guardian reports that the Labour leader has come under pressure to amend Labour’s immigration policy in the run up to next year’s General Election.
However, M Miliband said he would “resist” making any immediate changes to Labour immigration policy, which he said had been amended in 2010 when the last General Election took place.
UKIP leader Nigel Farage said that the results of last week’s two by-elections were a sign that Britain wanted “change”. UKIP took the seat in Clacton-on-Sea in Essex – but UKIP MP Douglas Carswell was previously the Conservative MP for the constituency before he resigned the seat to change parties.
Former New Labour Foreign Secretary Jack Straw said that it was “crucial” to show that Labour was on the people’s side on the issue of immigration. However, Mr Miliband and Labour Shadow Secretary Yvette Cooper have already set out new immigration measures Labour would take if elected to government in 2015, including amending qualifying periods for EU migrants claiming welfare benefits – and taking action to prevent migrants coming to work in the UK from being exploited or paid at levels below the minimum wage.
