A change in the weather boosted the number of migrants trying to cross the Mediterranean Sea to Italy last week, with the result that between Tuesday and Friday (5-6 June), the Italian Navy rescued a total of 2,500 illegal immigrants trying to reach European shores via Italy.

The rescue operations took place over 24 hours, with an amphibious transport dock ship the San Giorgio picking up 998 migrants, which included women and children. Another Italian vessel took 443 migrants ashore at Sicily.

Most of the migrants are making the journey across the Mediterranean Sea from Libya – both Libya and Italy have called for more help from the EU in tackling the escalating numbers of migrants trying to reach Europe from war torn countries in Africa and the Middle East.

Libya has said that if the EU does not offer more help, it will facilitate the refugees’ passage from Libya to Europe.

The most recent migrants to be rescued mainly come from Eritrea, Syria and sub-Saharan Africa.

A captain of one of the vessels carrying the migrants across the Mediterranean has been arrested for people smuggling.

The WHO estimates that there are around one billion migrants across the globe – other EU countries targeted by people smugglers include the tiny island of Malta.

Last July, Malta was forced to cancel flights it had arranged to return migrants to Libya. Malta received more than 400 migrants in one week, but the European Convention on Human Rights interceded in the deportations. Malta has also appealed to the EU for more help with dealing with migrants arriving on its shores by boat.

The Home Office in the UK estimates that one-fifth of migrants arriving in the EU heads for Britain, while Germany and France are the most popular countries for migrants to settle in.
