The three G4S guards on trial over the death of 46-year-old deportee Jimmy Mubenga have been cleared of his manslaughter at the Old Bailey in London.
BBC News reports that G4S guards Terence Hughes, 53, Colin Kaler, 52, and Stuart Tribelnig, 39, had denied acting dangerously or negligently on a British Airways flight. Mr Mubenga was restrained by the guards before the flight left for Angola.
It was alleged that Mr Mubenga was heard to complain of not being able to breathe while being restrained. He lost consciousness and was removed from the flight and taken to hospital, where he died after a heart attack.
The three guards had been accused of restricting Mr Mubenga’s breathing – but denied having forced him into a position in his seat which restricted his breathing.
During the trial, the court installed several airline seats to enable the guards to demonstrate how Mr Mubenga was restrained before the flight took off from Heathrow Airport.
He was being deported back to Angola after serving a two-year prison sentence for causing actual bodily harm.
The jury at the Old Bailey cleared all three men of manslaughter.
