German Chancellor Angela Merkel has rejected proposals by Prime Minister David Cameron for a restriction on access to benefits for EU migrants coming to Britain.
The German Chancellor is in London for a meeting with Mr Cameron on Britain’s membership of the EU – but refused to budge on freedom of movement within EU member states, which is a founding principle of the European Union.
Mrs Merkel said, however, that she would work to help curb benefit tourism within the EU – but added that the issues had to be dealt with within European laws.
At a press conference with Mr Cameron after their meeting, the German Chancellor said:
“Together we have said that we don’t want to question the right of freedom of movement – we need to say to our local authorities that abuse needs to be fought against so that freedom of movements can prevail.
“We need to look at social security systems of individual member states and to what extent they need to be adjusted,” she added.
Mr Cameron has pledged to renegotiate the UK’s membership of the EU in the run up to the May General Election.
If the Conservatives win the next General Election, the party has pledged that the UK will be given a referendum on EU membership in 2017.
After his meeting with Angela Merkel, the Prime Minister said:
“We have shown over the last five years what we can achieve together – over the budget, over the single market, over making Europe more competitive.
“I want to fix the problems in Britain’s relationship with the EU.”
