Prime Minister David Cameron has assured India on student visas after stating that “Britain is open for business” just days after scrapping a proposed £3,000 overseas bond policy for visitors from abroad.
Mr Cameron, who is currently on a trade mission in South Asia, revealed that he was eager to counter the “myth” that the UK is currently “freezing out” people from India as part of an immigration crackdown and urged business leaders, tourists and students to visit the country.
“There is no limit on the number of people that can come and study at British universities,” Mr Cameron said on Thursday. “They have got to have an English language qualification, they have got to have a place at university but there's no limit on the numbers that can come.”
Mr Cameron is hopeful that his latest trip will help to “cement Britain as India's partner of choice”. In addition, he revealed that his commitment to tough actions on reducing immigration numbers before 2015 should not affect the country's relationship with India.
He admitted that the recent visa bond furore had caused “lots of concern” at home and abroad and blamed the emergence of the policy on Deputy Prime Minister, Nick Clegg. Mr Cameron also criticised the Labour government for their previous approach to immigration. He concluded: “What's required on immigration is consistent and tough robust action, but measured sensible and calm rhetoric.”
