A bisexual man from Jamaica who is fighting to remain in the UK has been released after being detained in an immigration detention centre by the Home Office on four occasions.
The Morning Star reports that Orashia Edwards from Leeds is seeking asylum in Britain because he fears being targeted as a result of his sexuality if he is returned to Jamaica.
Mr Edwards says that there is a growing tide of homophobic violence in his home country and he fears for his safety if returned.
Mr Edwards was arrested for the fourth time in April and was sent to Morton Hall detention centre in Lincolnshire, where he alleges he received death threats because of his sexuality. His friends have condemned the Home Office for putting him through a “horrendous ordeal”.
Mr Edwards has family and friends in Leeds and is being supported in his asylum claim by the Leeds No Borders group.
A spokesman for Leeds No Borders said:
“This continuing state of uncertainty has had a profound impact on his mental and physical wellbeing.
“Orashia must never be detained again – and we urge the Home Office to grant him asylum immediately so he can finally rebuild his life in peace.”
