Lewes District Council’s Counter Fraud Team have prosecuted a man for fraud for subletting a property owned by the council.
Troy Hemsley was ordered to pay an Unlawful Profit Order of £2,984.00 and costs of £500 to Lewes District Council, after he pleaded guilty to illegally subletting the property.
The council said that, working closely with colleagues from the housing and legal services departments, the Counter Fraud Team conducted a detailed investigation into the illegal tenancy at the property.
They found evidence that Hemsley was not living at the address and had been unlawfully subletting the council property.
After sentencing, Lead Member for Housing at Lewes District Council, Councillor Ron Maskell, said:
“Lewes District Council does not tolerate tenancy fraud – there isn’t enough social housing to meet the needs of people who genuinely need it, so it is essential we make the best use of the housing that is available by making sure it is occupied by those who are legally entitled to do so.”
