Sandwell Council in the West Midlands has announced that nearly 100 new council homes are to be built in West Bromwich.
Planning permission has been approved to build a supported housing scheme featuring 93 properties and associated landscaping at a council-owned site in Oxford Road. The development will comprise 58 flats – 37 one-bedroom and 21 two-bedroom flats – with 35 bungalows, four of which will be designed to accommodate wheelchair users.
The move has been welcomed by two leading councillors at Sandwell Council.
Sandwell’s Council’s Cabinet Member for social care, Councillor Ann Shackleton, said:
“This exciting new project is part of the council’s accommodation and support strategy to address people’s future housing and care needs.
“The Oxford Road development is the first scheme to be developed as part of this strategy – and is designed to give people the opportunity to live as independently as possible, while being able to access additional care and support that is tailored to their individual needs.
“This supported housing scheme will offer accommodation in a safe and pleasant environment, with the focus on supporting those with a range of care needs – including people with learning disabilities, mental health issues or people needing support in later life.”
Sandwell’s Cabinet Member for housing, Councillor Kerrie Carmichael, added:
“It’s great news that that we now have the go-ahead to build this development.
“The scheme is being designed jointly by the council’s urban design and adult social care teams – and will provide much-needed quality and affordable housing, which is one of our top priorities.
“As well as contributing towards the regeneration of the area, once built the homes – a mixture of flats and bungalows – will be added to the council’s housing stock.”
