Brent Council in Greater London has reaffirmed its commitment to make housing in the borough a key priority – including working closely with landlords in the borough to deliver the council’s housing strategy.
On 1 January 2015, Brent introduced borough-wide HMO property licensing –
Brent now has the third highest number of landlords accredited under the London Landlord Accreditation Scheme.
In 2015-16, the council’s Grants and Empty Property Team worked with landlords to bring more than 100 empty housing units back into use. In 2014-15, Brent council also delivered 1,560 new homes, including 707 affordable homes.
At Brent's Private Landlord Forum on 29 June, leader of the council, Councillor Muhammed Butt, said:
“Brent residents across a wide spectrum of incomes and household types need decent and affordable housing.
“We are therefore keen to encourage investment in new and existing housing and to make the best use of the available stock.
“Housing Zones in Wembley and Alperton have the capacity to support the greatest growth moving forward, with over 20,000 new homes in total and specific interventions to accelerate delivery of over 5,000 new homes by 2025 – this represents a significant contribution to London-wide targets.
“We want to work in partnership with landlords and others to deliver our housing strategy, while using the tools available to us to raise standards and drive out rogue elements.”
Brent is one of the selected boroughs awarded Department for Communities and Local Government (DCLG) funding to tackle rogue landlords and poor conditions in the private rented sector.
