South Yorkshire Police have revealed that a record number of domestic violence incidents were reported to the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) in the year 2013-2014.

ITV News reports that a total of 2,551 domestic violence incidents were reported in South Yorkshire last year – of which, the CPS completed 1,890 prosecutions for domestic violence. Of these, 77% (1,360) prosecutions were successful.

The figures were revealed in the Violence against Women and Girls Crime Report 2013-2014.

South Yorkshire Police’s lead on domestic violence – Detective Chief Inspector Natalie Shaw – said the force was “committed to tackling domestic violence and bringing perpetrators of this heinous crime before the courts”.

DCI Shaw added that all police officers were trained in the investigation of domestic violence, so that when a report of domestic violence is received, police officers can collect and preserve any evidence.

She added that police officers also conduct “a full and thorough investigation”, in order to bring “a solid case” to the CPS for prosecution.

“We also have a dedicated team of officers to provide support to victims,” DCI Shaw added.

The CPS Violence Against Women and Girls (VAWG) strategy includes in its remit not only domestic violence against women in the home – but also other forms of violence against women and girls, including:

  • forced marriage

  • honour-based violence

  • female genital mutilation (FGM)

  • rape and sexual offences

  • prostitution

  • trafficking

  • child abuse

  • pornography.

The CPS strategy on domestic violence also offers protection to male victims of abuse in the home:

“Male victims will receive the same access to protection and legal redress – and the gender of the perpetrator does not make any difference to the CPS approach to bringing offenders to justice,” says the CPS website.
