Researchers at Birkbeck College in London are to investigate a link between Down’s Syndrome and Alzheimer’s disease.
Professor Annette Karmiloff-Smith and colleagues are planning to test 150 babies with Down’s syndrome in a study by the London Down’s Syndrome Consortium, funded by the Wellcome Trust.
People with Down’s syndrome develop amyloid-beta plaques in their brain tissue – which Alzheimer’s patients also develop. However, not all Down’s syndrome patients go on to develop Alzheimer’s disease and researchers are investigating the mechanism which protects some Down’s syndrome patients from Alzheimer’s disease.
Babies taking part will have their brains monitored during “fun” activities such as watching videos. Medical history and patterns of eating and sleeping will also be recorded.
The Wellcome Trust has made available £2.5 million to the London Down’s Syndrome Consortium for research – and the research into the link between Down’s syndrome and Alzheimer’s disease is expected to help patients with both or either conditions.
Prof Karmiloff-Smith said:
“The study of babies with Down’s syndrome may lead to treatments that could slow down the cognitive decline seen in Alzheimer’s disease – or even reverse it.
“By identifying risk factors for dementia during infancy, we may indeed be able to target preventative treatments for individuals with Down’s syndrome – and for the general population.”
