A member of an elite aristocratic family has been jailed for two years and given a restraining order after he subjected his wife to a “substantial period of domestic violence” while on frequent drink and drug binges.
Fifty-five-year-old Lord Edward Alexander Somerset attacked Lady Caroline on numerous occasions over a 22-year period between 1990 and 2012. A court heard that the couple often rowed about Somerset's crack and heroin abuse at their home in Badminton Estate in Gloucestershire.
The violent attacks began only months after the couple married in the 90s and moved to New York, where they both indulged in a party lifestyle. Their marriage began to falter after the birth of their daughter, Francesca.
Lady Caroline revealed that she was “genuinely fearful” for her life during the assaults, which left her requiring hospital treatment and suffering a dislocated finger on one occasion. Somerset, son of the Duke of Beaufort, pleaded guilty to four separate charges relating to assault and actual bodily harm at Bristol Crown Court earlier this month.
Judge Mark Horton said: “On many occasions this [violence] was fuelled by, or caused by, your spiral and descent into various addictions. You abused your power over your wife not only physically but more importantly by psychological and emotional damage caused by that physical control.”
