We are pleased to announce that family and child care director Krina Parmar has been shortlisted for the Family Law Awards 2022.

Duncan Lewis and Not Beyond Redemption have also been shortlisted for the Community Interaction Award. Now celebrating its twelfth year, the Family Law Awards recognise the important work of family lawyers, and celebrate their many successes and outstanding achievements.

Krina Parmar

In shortlisting Krina for the Family Law Partner of the Year category, the panel has recognised her outstanding legal advice and assistance to all of her clients and, with much of her caseload being publicly funded (legal aid). Such clients are frequently some of the most vulnerable members of society. Krina is a specialist in her field being a member of the Law Society Children Panel.

Krina’s legal skill is reflected in her listing as a ‘recommended lawyer’ in the 2022 edition of the Legal 500 UK. She manages a disparate portfolio of Duncan Lewis family and childcare teams from Leicester to Birmingham, Luton, Peterborough and Milton Keynes, whilst handling her own complex casework. Since joining Duncan Lewis in 2013 Krina has been instrumental in the growth of the family childcare teams outside London.

Her commitment to supporting the vulnerable and the underprivileged extends beyond her clients, to helping those from disadvantaged backgrounds break into the legal industry. Last year, through Duncan Lewis, Krina embraced the government’s Kickstart Scheme; an initiative aimed at creating permanent employment opportunities for 16 to 25 year olds on Universal Credit who were otherwise at a heightened risk of unemployment. Krina handpicked five young people and helped them obtain placements at Duncan Lewis where they gained valuable insight, professional training and experience. Two of those individuals are now fully-fledged caseworkers and key members of Krina’s talented team. This nomination recognises her continuing work in all such areas.

Not Beyond Redemption and Duncan Lewis

The Community Interaction award acknowledges innovative voluntary community programmes, corporate social responsibility programmes, and pro bono activity in communities. Our shortlisting recognises the importance of a hugely successful scheme set up by Ravi Mahey in the Harrow Family and Childcare Team. Since late 2019 Ravi was a pro bono lawyer for the charity before becoming a board trustee. The Harrow team has handled a number of pro bono cases and support the ongoing work of the charity both in and outside of work.

As part of the scheme, the board at Duncan Lewis have graciously for the last 2 years allowed trainees from Ravi and Alia Lewis’s team to be seconded to the charity to work to gain legal experience helping mothers who have been imprisoned and separated from their families. This has been funded by Duncan Lewis and is part of the ongoing collaboration and support for some of the most vulnerable members of our society. Since 2013, legal aid has not been available for parents seeking support in respect of children matters unless they meet the gateway. This has impacted imprisoned women who have been left with no avenue in addressing any issues around contact to their children.

NBR volunteers attend court for women in prison, or who have been freed, and assist them in re-establishing and regenerating the fundamental relationship between mother and child. Duncan Lewis is proud to be a collaborative partner for the charity and honoured to be shortlisted with the charity.
