A Freedom of Information Request from Pulse Magazine revealed that the closure of a record-breaking number of GPs last year forced over a quarter of a million patients to find a new doctor.
Chairwoman of the Royal College of GPs, Professor Helen Stokes-Lampard, said “GPs and their teams can no longer cope with ever-growing patient demand without the necessary funding and workforce to deal with it. This has serious consequences for patient safety and the wellbeing of hard working family doctors and their practice teams.”
Dr Chaand Nagpaul, chairman of the British Medical Association’s GP Committee told Pulse that local Clinical Commissioning Groups (CCGs) were to blame for preventing funding from getting to the correct place. He explained: “The tragedy is clinical commissioning groups have not delivered their part in making the resources available. Many practices that should have received support have had none to date. That’s been a failing of local delivery.”
Labour’s shadow health secretary, Jonathan Ashworth, said GPs need more help, and perhaps an urgent cash injection, to alleviate pressure on struggling hospitals. As a result of the GP closures, patients often have to travel further for care.
