I work in the Housing Department at the Duncan Lewis City Office, where I handle cases related to disrepair, homelessness and possession. As a newcomer to the team, I’ve been focusing on these areas, but once I become more familiar with the system, I’m eager to expand into broader areas of housing law. Under the guidance of Director Manjinder and with the support of my colleagues, I strive to ensure our clients receive the best service possible. Being able to assist individuals during some of the most challenging times in their lives is incredibly fulfilling, as it allows me to contribute to society in a meaningful way.
I assist a range of clients, including those facing homelessness where the council has refused to help, tenants whose landlords have breached their agreements, and individuals served with a Section 21 notice. These clients often require legal aid (publicly funded aid) to take their matters forward. For example, I am currently working with a client who was made homeless and received a notice from the council stating their duty to assist had ended. We are in the process of challenging this decision to ensure the client’s rights are upheld.
Duncan Lewis has a rigorous training program that I completed during my first few weeks, helping me to develop and strengthen my skills. As a recent graduate, I’ve gained a deeper understanding of legal processes and statutes, which has been an invaluable experience.
